Always seemed like a decent fella away from football, with a good sense of humour.
Absolutely incredible manager as well, the likes of which we will never see again in our lifetimes.

I wish him well. I had a grudging respect for him throughout the years but you only have to see the respect he earned from loads of top players and managers to understand the standing of the man. I didn't know about the John Lyall bit so hats off to him for that. He did a very nice thing last week for Wenger too which was great to see. They had their battles over the years but still had great respect for one another. Won't see the like of him and Wenger again but the amount of trophies Sir Alex won was unreal. Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery from me.

An absolutely legendary manager, to knock the old firm dominance off their perch in Scotland with Aberdeen, then do it to Liverpool in England. Top of the tree really, with messrs Clough, Paisley, Stein, behind him.
Absolutely nailed on for a Man Utd win on Thursday, plus Jose won't want to lose two on the bounce!

Manchester United come close mind.He's record speaks for itself and Sand Irons earlier post regarding Jonny Lyall which I'd heard before confirms what he was about which I can't remember reading about in the press.
Very few in any proffesion get to the top without being controversial.

I've said it before, but in a parrallel universe, where that goal that saved his Man U job was not scored, he became West Ham's manager. It's not difficult to imagine, with his connections to Lyall. The timing was right as well. He was an East End (of Glasgow) dockers' union rep, from a docking family; more West Ham than Man U.
Gutted that I live in this universe, if I'm honest.

He wasn't averse to using fisticuffs on some players. Joe Harper and Mark McGee came a cropper at Aberdeen and Beckham had an eye injury which was explained away by a flying boot.
If anyone crossed him,out they went.
Old fashioned methods perhaps but some players deserve a good hiding for the liberties they take.

His teams played with style and swagger, he had more money to spend than other clubs at the beginning but still built special teams, and even when other clubs come to the party with more money he'd still eventually come out on top. The reason he is the best, though, is that they never faded, even after a bad season (finishing 3rd) they'd come roaring back and win the league within a season or two. He maintained standards throughout, and even retired on a Premier League win at the age of 71. Phenomenal.
For someone to rate Bobby Robson against him, with the greatest of respect to a good football man, they are poles apart as managers, and it just shows you that they shouldn't be discussing football matters.
